Language Exploration and Awareness by Larry Andrews Ch. 8

Exploration: Hymn Language (pg. 238)
Directions: Look up the meanings for the italicized words in the following lines, taken from well-known hymns.

A. "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me..."
  • "a deplorably unfortunate or unhappy person."
B. "Rock of ages, cleft for me..."
  • "a space or opening made by cleavage; a split."
C. "Before Jehovah's aweful throne..."
  • "full of awe"
D."Now let the vault of heaven resound..."
  • an arched structure, usually made of stones, concrete, or bricks, forming a ceiling or roof over a hall, room, sewer, or other wholly or partially enclosed construction"

1. Do you use any of these words today?
  • Other than vault, no.
2. How do these words and their definitions illustrate how language changes over time?
  • The changing of vernacular is shocking to me. Over time, it adapts. For example, many random words have been added to the dictionary such as google! Years ago, I'm sure people would have thought this was crazy!
